Electric Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2028

The government has announced Electric Vehicle Excise Duty, usually shortened to eVED, as a future mileage charge for electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars from April 2028. It is separate from the 2026/27 VED calculator on this site.

Last reviewed: 9 July 2026.

Direct answer

From April 2028, the announced eVED charge is 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrid cars. It is expected to be paid alongside existing Vehicle Excise Duty, not instead of it. It is not included in 2026/27 calculator results.

Announced mileage charge

Vehicle typeAnnounced rateSimple example
Battery electric car3p per mile10,000 miles would be £300 before any future indexation.
Plug-in hybrid car1.5p per mile10,000 miles would be £150 before any future indexation.

Not in 2026/27 results

Current calculator results show the April 2026 VED tables. eVED is a future April 2028 charge, so it is not added to today's VED estimate.

Paid alongside VED

The announcement says eVED will be payable alongside existing Vehicle Excise Duty. An electric car can therefore still have standard VED and, from 2028, a mileage-based charge.

Details may change

The policy is future-dated and subject to legislation and operational details. We treat it as guidance context, not as a live tax-status calculation.
