Car tax for pre-2001 cars
Cars first registered before 1 March 2001 do not use the modern CO2 band system. For 2026/27, they are taxed by engine size: up to 1549cc, or over 1549cc.

Direct answer
For 2026/27, a pre-2001 car with an engine up to 1549cc pays £230 a year. A pre-2001 car with an engine over 1549cc pays £375 a year.

CO2 is not used
The pre-2001 system is based on engine size, not CO2 emissions or official fuel economy.
